12 Days of Christmas GMAT Competition with Lots of FunIn country X, the annual expenditure on gasoline in 2005 was $200 billion. What was the expenditure in 2006?
(1) Between 2005 and 2006, the price of gasoline increased by 25% and consumption decreased by 20%.
(2) At the price in 2006, if country X consumed 20% more than what it actually did, the expenditure would have been $240 billion in 2006.
Equation is
Price * Consumption = Expenditure.
Expenditure in '05 =
P*C = $200 Billion
Expenditure in '06 = ?
(1) Between 2005 and 2006, the price of gasoline increased by 25% and consumption decreased by 20%.
New price = 1.25P
New Consumption = .8C
So expenditure = 1.25P*.8C |we know the value of P*C
Putting the values we will get the value of expenditure in '06.
Sufficient(2) At the price in 2006, if country X consumed 20% more than what it actually did, the expenditure would have been $240 billion in 2006.
Let the price in '06 be P1
Let the consumption be C1
According to the statement
P1*1.2C1 = $240 billion
We need to find P1*C1
Can easily be done.
Sufficient.D is the answer.
