Expenditure in 2005 = E = $200 Bn

Expenditure (E) = Consumption (C) * Price (P)

=> C*P = $200 Bn..................................................(1)

Statement 1

Price increased by 25% => new price = 1.25 P

Consumption decreased by 20% => new consumption = 0.8 C

Expenditure = 0.8C*1.25P = C*P = $200 Bn (from eq 1 above)

Statement 1 is sufficient

Statement 2

Let's say price in 2006 = P'

E = P' * 1.2 C = $240 Bn......................(2)

Now we don't know the value of C, P or P'

Two equations and three variables.

Statement 2 is insufficient to answer the question.

IMO OA should be A option

2005

Price of the gasoline = $x
Consumption = y

So in 2005 - x * y = $200B

Statement 1

2006

Price = $ 1.25x
Consumption : 0.80y

Expenditure : 1.25x * 0.80y = x*y = 200B

Hence sufficient

Statement 2

Price = $ z
Consumption : $1.20x

Expenditure : z * 1.20x = 1.20 xz = 240B

xz = $200B

Hence sufficient

IMO - D

12 Days of Christmas GMAT Competition with Lots of Fun

In country X, the annual expenditure on gasoline in 2005 was $200 billion. What was the expenditure in 2006?

(1) Between 2005 and 2006, the price of gasoline increased by 25% and consumption decreased by 20%.
(2) At the price in 2006, if country X consumed 20% more than what it actually did, the expenditure would have been $240 billion in 2006.

Equation is
Price * Consumption = Expenditure.
Expenditure in '05 = P*C = $200 Billion
Expenditure in '06 = ?

(1) Between 2005 and 2006, the price of gasoline increased by 25% and consumption decreased by 20%.
New price = 1.25P
New Consumption = .8C
So expenditure = 1.25P*.8C |we know the value of P*C
Putting the values we will get the value of expenditure in '06.
Sufficient

(2) At the price in 2006, if country X consumed 20% more than what it actually did, the expenditure would have been $240 billion in 2006.
Let the price in '06 be P1
Let the consumption be C1
According to the statement
P1*1.2C1 = $240 billion
We need to find P1*C1
Can easily be done.
Sufficient.

D is the answer.

I have a question. Am I safe to say we know what happened between 2005 and 2006 but have no idea of what happened in 2006 . Hence we can’t infer from between 2005-2006 to know what happen 2006 . Am I right ?
