150 is what percent of 30 ?

(A) 5%
(B) 20%
(C) 50%
(D) 200%
(E) 500%

To solve we can create a fairly simple word translation. Remember if we are asked “x is what percent of y”? we can set up the following expression:

x/y * 100 = ?

In this problem we are asked '150 is what percent of 30' and we can solve this by substituting 150 for x and 30 for y:

150/30 x 100 = ?

5 x 100 = 500%

Answer: E

as we need to find out what percentage 150 is of 30, we can quickly cancel out options A-C as we need to find a value higher than 100%.

200% of 30 is 60.

We are left with 500%. E

We can do it in 2 ways:

1. 150 is what % of 30

Simply translate the question into:

(150/30)*100 = ?

5*100
500

2) This is equation form

x% of 30 = 150 or x%*30 = 150
x% = 150/30
x% = 5*100
x% = 500

In either case, the choice is E.

Translating the question stem into an algebraic formula we get the following:

150 = (x/100)30, in which (x/100) is equivalent to "what percent". So when solving for X we get 500.

The above answer is nice; it also provides a formulaic way of doing it. But think about this in a theoretical sense so that you do not have to create a model for a question that should be answered in <15 seconds.

30 is 100% of 30.
This must mean that 60 is 200% of 30 (since 60 is twice as much as 30, so twice as much as 100% is 200%).
90 is 300% of 30.
120 is 400% of 30.
and 150 is 500% of 30.

If you see a question like this on the GMAT, quickly (but nonetheless cautiously) do this:
(150/30) = 5
5 * 100% = 500%

200 is what percent of 30?
200/30 = 6.66
6.66 * 100% = 666%
