Just got back from the GMAT exam. Looks like I'm shut out from the big consulting firms, but what the heck. So here is some feedback I thought might be helpful.
The first time I took the GMAT 3 yrs ago, got a 660(Q41,V38). Was completely thrown off by the quant last time. As an engineer, I was overconfident and just spent a lot of time on the questions. Also the GMAT prep materials are not a good representative of the quant sutff. Had focussed only on verbal and had prepared for at least 3 weeks.
This time around Q was a lot easier. The
MGMAT quant and challenges really helped. I was breezing in the quant section. There were a couple of tricky ones. I just took some intelligent guess and moved on. Surprisingly very few or no probability questions. My strategy was focus on as many questions I "could" solve till the last 2 min and then guess. I had finished question 35 when the last 2 min started. I just blindly guessed Q36 (I knew it would take a long time to solve). Q37 I did some calcs and took a better guess. Final quant - 49.
Verbal is what go me below the 700 mark. I would say verbal was very tricky. It just seemed like the answer(s) I wanted to see were there. A good sign I believe that GMAT is trying to trick you. I was able to easily narrow down to couple of contenders, but I have this nasty habit of always picking the wrong one.
I think
MGMAT,Challenges and OG were the most helpful materials.
MGMAT sentence correction is very helpful. There is also a LSAT pdf on CR floating in these forums somewhere. I thought that was helpful for CR. In the end verbal is a lot of practice. OG is more helpful because they have explanations. There is no point in practicing without trying to see where you went wrong without logging it. I spent 3 days on studying verbal. I think I needed more. But I'm done with GMAT. Think I will focus on performing in mid-tier consulting firms.
