I hope my solution is correct.

Let us say the gardener plants 1 tree on first day and 1 tree on a second day. The he has to plant 8 trees on third day. Following are the combinations for planting 1 tree on a first day
(1,1,8)
(1,2,7)
(1,3,6)
...
...
(8,1,1)
Total 8 combinations
If he plants 2 tree on first day you get
(2,1,7)
(2,2,6)
....
(8,1,1)
Total 7 combinations

Like this you get 8+7+6+4+3+2+1 = n*(n+1)/2 = 8*9/2 = 36
