A. the lesser cornstalk borer is widely distributed, control of them is
"cornstalk borer" singular cannot be referred using "them".

B. widely distributed, measures to control the lesser cornstalk borer are
Initial phrase is modifier so should be followed by "cornstalk borer".

C. widely distributed, lesser cornstalk borer control is
Initial phrase is modifier so should be followed by "cornstalk borer" and not by "cornstalk borer control".

D. the lesser cornstalk borer is widely distributed, measures to control it are
Seems OK.

E. it is widely distributed, control of the lesser cornstalk borer is
Initial phrase is modifier so should be followed by "cornstalk borer".

A. that the figures for average income and unemployment show as wide of
"wide of" is unnecessary.

B. that average-income and unemployment figures show as wide

C. that the average-income and unemployment figures are showing as wide of
"wide of" is unnecessary.

D. of average-income and unemployment figures that show as wide of
"wide of" is unnecessary.

E. of figures for average income and unemployment showing as wide

Between B and E, I chose B. Because I think "that" is needed, however, I do not have any other convincing reason on why E should be rejected.

For Question 1, C is the best choice here.
For Question 2, D or E , have doubt about "average-income and unemployment figures that " should it be "figures which show" ?

1. I take D. "control" is not the subject, so C is out
2. B looks good

A. them for singular? no, it cannot be.
B. Although widely distributed? dontno.
C. Same as B.
D. it for Lesser Cornstalk and them for measures - good.
E. control of the lesser cornstalk borer modifies it - does it make sense? nope.

So D.
