Is |x+1| < 2 ?

-x-1 < 2
x > -3

or

x < 1

statement 1

(x-1)^2 < 1

x = 1 ---> true
x = 0 ---> true

insufficient

statement 2

x^2 - 2 < 0

x = 1 ---> true
x = 0 ---> true

insufficient

both statements

x^2 -2x < 0

x^2 - 2 < 0

-2x+2 < 0

2x < 0

x < 0

insufficient

the answer is (E)

please explain your answers.

The question is asking if -3<x<1

(1) 0<x<2
INSUFFICIENT

(2) -1.4<x<1.4
INSUFFICIENT

Together, 0<x<1.4 INSUFFICIENT

I'd like use drawing for inequality. Often it is faster end more resistant to errors.
