Hello guys,
I just finished my first GMAT attempt after a month of full-time learning and got a weak 565. I fully understand that I shouldn’t have expected to suddenly get a 650+ score after a month of learning, but my initial goal was getting a 605+. Now I’d need some help from the experts here on how to move forward, get my learnings straight and finish with a 615-625 with another 5 weeks of learning.
Background on my learning experience as of now, my strengths and weaknesses:
- I initially went through the whole content with TTP in the past 4 weeks (took time off from work; consulting) to cover everything and started with practice tests only ~10 days prior to today’s first attempt (test center). My previous mock results were really spread apart and I haven’t had enough time to work intensively on my weaknesses + I know it is not smart to do that many mocks in a short time period without real improvement.
My mock results:
545/625/605/575 in this order
So I am fully aware that I shouldn’t have expected more than my score with 565 - but of course we all know we are often aiming higher than we are actually supposed to and hope for the best.
Quant:
From what I experienced for now, by far my weakest topic (by a mile). In the mocks where I got 600+ either DI was great (92% percentile) or my Verbal was really good (96% percentile). In quant, I understand the basics and I have the feeling that TTP has helped me a lot to understand the formulas and supported me in understanding the necessary things. But as soon as I am challenged with rather difficult questions (605-655+) I have the feeling of being overwhelmed.
Also, I checked a lot of questions here in the forum and I got the feeling that they (so actual exam questions) are more difficult than on TTP (for quant especially).
Verbal and DI:
As already mentioned above, I have quite an easy time to get a sufficient scoring in Verbal and DI (apart from more difficult DS-Questions + TPA; as most of them are combined with Quant Knowledge).
In DI, I generally do not have that much struggle to understand even the most difficult questions, but it is often a topic of time, whether or not I can excel here - so more reps is necessary. But I am quite sure that I can get things straight.
In Verbal, I had the feeling that some of the TTP questions were actually a lot harder than the exam questions, and I get sufficient scores throughout the mocks as well as on the exam. Especially RC really fits me well and I have a good understanding being almost always in the 85+% quartile.
Takeaways:
I am now aware, that Quant is my key weakness for a sufficient score and I need to work on the weaker topics extensively. Now my question how to tackle this issue:
Should I stick to TTP to have the overview and back-up of the basic knowledge needed and learn my way up with GMAT Club examples and the distribution of difficulty levels (500/550/605/655/705+)?
How do I analyze my mistakes correctly? Do I setup an extensive excel marking my topics, flaws and mistakes and work my way up? What did you guys do to analyze your weaknesses and mistakes?
Looking forward to your help and guidance!
