Let me start off by saying, I really, really don't want to retake the GMAT.
2nd Attempt: 740 Q46, V46 (IR 8)
I'd been slammed at work and hadn't had the chance to study for all of June/July but I had a test scheduled for Jul 23rd, I figured I'd sit for the exam and treat it as a really expensive practice exam. To my absolute surprise, I scored a 740. Don't know how, don't know why - luckiest day of my life.
Only problem - I scored a 46Q (62%tile). The general consensus I saw over at Wall Street Oasis was to retake as no top-10 program would find my low quant percentile acceptable. WSO is a pretty toxic atmosphere of undergrads spouting misinformation so I was hoping I could get some informed feedback from all of you GMAT experts!
With the right amount of studying, I feel pretty confident that I can get a 48/49Q. I scored a 47Q on my first attempt in 2014 (700 47Q 39V). I just really don't want to retake and I can't see how a 760 would be substantially better than a 740. For reference, I'm targeting M7, Columbia, Duke, UVA.
As a side note, I also didn't finish my 3rd body paragraph and conclusion for the writing section (didn't take it seriously as I thought it was a practice exam).

Hi spiffy,
First off, a 740 is a strong score (it's right around the 97th percentile overall), so you should apply to any Business Schools that interest you. Since you've named some highly competitive Schools, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and application plans. There's a Forum full of them here:

As an aside, while the Q46 won't impress anyone, it would only be a minor 'red flag' in very specific situations (re: highly competitive Finance Programs or other Specialty Programs), so you likely have nothing to worry about in that regard. If your AWA is less than a 4.0 though, then you might have an issue (an Admissions Expert would better be able to evaluate your overall profile and determine how much of an issue - if any - would exist).

Congrats! 740 is a great score -- just keep in context your overall application profile. You may not be the candidate who stands out with a 740+ score, but if you feel confident you can stand out in another way -- your background, your story, your career path -- then this should be a good-enough score for the target schools you want. If you have a clear story/path/reason for business school and can differentiate yourself based on your work experience, then you got a lot going for you.
Remember, optimize for your overall application profile - not just one local maxima.
