Want an MBA CV that reads like an MBB Consultant? Start thinking like one!
AdComs at top B-schools (and recruiters at MBB) don’t just look at what you did. They look at how you think.
Here are 3 consulting frameworks you can use to transform your CV from a list of tasks into a high-impact profile:
1. MECE (Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive):
Consultants solve problems by breaking them into parts that don't overlap (ME), but together cover every possible angle (CE).
CV Tip: Review your bullet points for a single role. Do they overlap?
Group them into distinct buckets of impact e.g. Revenue Growth, Process Innovation, People Leadership.
This shows a 360-degree grasp of your business impact without being repetitive.
2. The 80/20 Rule (Pareto Principle):
80% of your total results usually come from 20% of your activities.
CV Tip: Space on your CV is precious. Don't waste five bullets on routine daily tasks and only one on your most complex project.
80% of your CV space should be dedicated to the 20% of work that actually moved the needle.
3. Top-Down Communication:
Consultants always lead with the answer, then provide the supporting data.
CV Tip: Use the Result-Action-Context format. Start every bullet with the 'So What?'
For example, instead of saying
‘Used Python to analyze data and reduced costs by 10%’
rephrase it as:
‘Reduced operational costs by 10% by leveraging Python to automate legacy data workflows...’
The Bottom Line: Your CV is more than a list of past jobs. It’s proof of how you'll perform in the future.
Using these frameworks helps you highlight transferable skills and tangible impact in a way that resonates with AdComs. It also proves you have the executive mindset they are looking for.
