380 (diagnostic test) to 540 (real GMAT test)(Q48, V17!), mistakes, lessons and moving on:
Thanks to GMATCLUB and Steve Patrick (gmatfix)Hello Friends,
First of all I would like to thank all of you guys who helped me knowingly or unknowingly by providing such an insightful debates and explanations for the problems. Though, I haven’t posted much on this forum but I have been continuously visiting this forum and was solving problems.
Here is my experience with real GMAT:
The journey started in March, 2010. I took the diagnostic test from Princeton Review and scored 380 (yes, you read it correctly it’s only 380!) (Q33 and V9!) At that time I had almost no knowledge of what GMAT is all about, how it works and interestingly I wrote AWA sections also on diagnostic test, the part which I think most of people skip on diagnostic test!
I registered for the Princeton Review course in March and finished the whole course in 15days! It was USELESS! (I’m not going to kind on anyone and this is really true, and it seems like the course is not designed for GMAT!) I had no other option than to join this course as this was near my city and opted for classroom course as I thought this will be helpful as classroom course gives you opportunity to interact with tutor. Tutor was really helpful, no doubt in that, but the course manual PR provides suck! I’m not going to write more about this... as people know about this course better...
My accuracy hadn’t improved by PR course; I was almost on the same stage as I was earlier and nothing new information was given in their course.
After few months I came across GMAT Club and came to know about Manhattan SC guide, which people recommend the most and I ordered that guide. I read this guide religiously almost 3 times. It is really a good one, helped me to understand what SC is all about!
For CR section, Powerscore CR bible is really a “holy bible”, I went through this book also almost 3 times.
On Math section, I was confident that I can handle this section easily and I think I did, but I think 51 is easily achievable if you do all the
GMAT club tests! I took the opportunity to solve many questions from GMATClub test’s discussion topic. The tests are really tough and make you ready for anything..
I even skipped DS section of OG! I didn’t touched DS section of OG and went through all the questions of OG Math Review.
I also went through the gmatfix’s few questions in my last days of preparation, the discussion and analysis of the questions is quite an interesting one, this helped me a lot and moreover Steve Patrick is very much nice guy, always ready to help you.
My CAT scores before going to real exam were
570 (Q40, V28) – PR CAT- 2, more detail here
1st-shock-practice-test-95079.html550 (Q39, V26) – PR CAT-3, more detail here
2nd-shock-practice-test-95909.html 640 (Q45, V35) – GMATPrep – 1, 4days before real exam
600 (Q41, V31) – GMATPrep –2, 3days before real exam and I’m not sure about the split.
On one or more than one topic founder of this club “BB” has advised to improve Math section if you can’t improve much on Verbal part after regular attempted, I took this advice and practiced passionately for Math section and got good (I think) results! Thanks to “BB”.
Real GMAT 20th July, 540 (Q48, V17!), I was expecting 600+, but I ruined it in my verbal section! My scores on verbal section on practice exam varied from 26 to 35 and I was expecting that I will get around 30 on verbal. I’m little bit disappointed but I haven’t lost hopes. This was my 1st attempt for real GMAT and I’m gonna improve this score!
Mistakes, lessons and moving on: 1. I should have kept
error log, as on the final days I wasn’t sure what is my weakest area and on what area should I work more.
2. The test anxiety kills, on the last 3days, I was almost exhausted and I was like Ok, it’s enough and it should pass over now. This feeling shouldn’t have come to my mind.
3. At test centre I hadn’t good experience either, my proctor was playing some sort of video while I was on verbal part (around 30th question) and I got distracted! I should have asked her to stop that noise but don’t know why I didn’t. I should have asked her to stop that thing..
4. I become nervous on seeing the 4 paragraphs (2 long and 2 short) around 30th question, and in my whole preparation I had seen only 3 paragraphs. I shouldn’t have become nervous.
5. While I was attending Verbal part, I started accessing whether my last question was right for wrong, I shouldn’t have done this..
6. Another mistake I did was I wasn’t ready for “boldface” and “fill in the blank” questions, I had heard from friends that these types of questions comes only if you are doing too good! But I got these questions and scored so low..
7. I had no strategy to attend the RC section, I messed up the whole thing, I was taking much time to solve the RC question, read and re-read and then re-read.. This shouldn’t have happened! I should have a strong strategy on RC section. Even I hadn’t attempted the RC paragraphs from OG! I was like, ok, I’ll do, but without pre-planned strategy this is much difficult.
8. On real GMAT I was almost able to eliminate 2-3 wrong answer choices, but finally to decide between 2 choices I couldn’t do better job! Just because the lack of practice!
9. I had no time to practice as I’m working guy! I should have given myself a good time for practice. I booked a GMAT date so early, thinking that this will force me to study but my busy schedule kept me away from practice. Don’t book your date so early! Wait for the time till you get 700+ couple of times on GMATPrep.
10. I should have taken part in the discussion, simply being spectator will not solve problems till you don’t ask for help and don’t be shy for asking help!
11. Though I had developed a study plan but I couldn’t stick to that plan due to many unavoidable problems, once you have developed a plan try your best to stick to that exam.
Need suggestions: 1. Should I register for Knewton course? This course is available for Indian students for low cost but the access is only for 3 months. Is 3 months enough to improve score by almost 100+ points? As you know my weakest area is Verbal. What is people’s response for this course?
2. What should be my strategy from now onwards, except from the above mentioned points?
3. Any other related suggestions will be highly appreciated.
