Hi BitanPaul,

Many GMATers are unhappy with their initial practice scores, but you really shouldn't be. That 440 is just a measure of your skills right now - and you'll improve on that result over time as you learn more about the content, Tactics and little 'secrets' of the Exam. At this point, there's no way to know for sure what you are capable of achieving (as far as a GMAT Score is concerned), but the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on your timeline and your goals:

1) What study materials do you currently have access to?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hi BitanPaul,

Honestly, 440 is a fine start. Improving by 300 points is certainly a challenge; however, if you can follow a linear and structured study plan as well as a realistic timeline, then any score increase is possible. Hi guys, I appeared for an Official Mock GMAT before I start my prep and got a 440 without a single day of study.

Is that a good thing considering my target as 740+ after I'm fully prepared?

Posted from my mobile device

Your 440 doesn't really mean anything until you know how to take the GMAT correctly. Otherwise, if you aren't "taking the test right," it can't estimate your ability level. So we don't have any way to tell - did the test underestimate you because you messed up something logistically, or are your skills actually at the 440 level right now?

When I say "not taking the test right," I mostly mean two things:

- not understanding the rules for solving certain types of problems - for instance, not knowing what 'sufficient' and 'insufficient' mean for Data Sufficiency, not knowing what 'assumption' means for Critical Reasoning, etc.
- running out of time well before the end, or alternatively, rushing way too much and not taking enough time to work through problems thoroughly

You can be fantastic at executive reasoning, quantitative skills, etc. and still get a terrible Quant score on your first try, just because you don't have the "feel" for how quickly you need to work, or because you misinterpret the rules for a common problem type.

So, you should at least read up on GMAT time management:

https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/blog ... nt-part-3/

and the different types of problems on the test, how many of each to expect, etc:

https://www.mba.com/exams/gmat/about-th ... -structure

At that point, if you were to take another practice test, it would probably come closer to reflecting where your abilities are right now. But even if you scored another 440 or even lower, that would be fine. You may be able to learn a ton of GMAT material in a short time! I wouldn't start to be concerned about your timeline unless you had studied for a while and done multiple practice tests with no significant improvement.
