I first took the GMAT in Aug. and didn't even know what I was doing. I scored ridiculous 470 (27q,28v). The only prep I had was reading the first 1/2 of PR Cracking the GMAT and worked maybe the first 1/3 problems in OG11 total. Also, I haven't even seen a geometry or algebra problem in 10 years. I'm a little older but had 3.8 in college quite a while back. Did not study much; maybe 2-3 hrs. a week for 6 weeks. I knew I could take it again so I just wanted to see what would happen and, wow 470!!! At this point I did not know that this site even existed.
I took a couple of months off and then started to study a little and I decided to hire a tutor from PR. I determined myself to take a more dedicated approach to studying, practicing and making some real improvement. I studied about 2.5 hrs. every weekday and took a CAT every weekend and reviewed the mistakes. This was 3 months ago. I took the GMAT Tuesday 1/29 and scored a 640 (q43,v34). I know its not a 700+. I am trying only to get into a decent Part –Time MBA since I have a mortgage f-t job , family and such. I think the only reason I didn't get into the 700s or even the upper 600s is because I never got to the challenges and did not complete the MGMAT material. I just simply ran out of time. Here is a list of the materials I used:
PR Cracking the GMAT
OG 11 (completed)
OG Verbal&Quant Supplements (hardly opened)
MGMAT SC, Word Translations, and Geometry (read five chapters each SC & WT only 1 ch. in Geometry book) SC Book is great
PR Manual for the GMAT (comes w/ PR class) used as reference
Old Algebra Book (I think it is from High School) used as reference
10 CATS: 3 PR, 3 MGMAT, 4 GMATPrep (1&2 twice) ranges 490-640
I Used the PR tutor in the beginning for concepts and then for explanations of Prep test answers and when the OG explanations were too vague for me. Hey this guy made 800. Yup that’s right 800.
The best score improvement I incurred was when I spent many hours a week reviewing the error logs over and over until the concepts stuck. I took a total of 10 CATS every weekend leading up to the real deal and tried to improve by focusing on weak areas between tests and correcting the defects. I used many ideas given on this forum.
I don’t know if I will pursue 700+ because I don’t know if I really need it. 20 yrs W/E. I am probably too old to go to a F-T top 10 MBA anyway and can’t really move ‘cause my company will be paying for the MBA. Also, I will not have time to study rigorously again for a few more months. I believe anyone can get a high score if they hang around here long enough.
