If we multiply the numerator and denominator by √5 + 2, the denominator becomes (√5 - 2)(√5 + 2) = 5 - 4 = 1, and because we're now dividing by 1, the numerator becomes the answer, (√5 + 2)(√5 + 2) = 5 + 4√5 + 4 = 9 + 4√5.
