god..i took like 5 minutes..

i fixed John in every position and then calculated the permutations

i get 60 alright.

Either case is just as likely, so yes, I just assumed it. Do you think the assumption is unwarranted?

yes, i get it now...since nothing is known about the ability of the participants, its reasonable to assume 1/2 chance of either of them finishing ahead of each other.
