Friends,
Reading the GMATClub forum posts have been very helpful - I hope some of you will be willing to share your thoughts and advice for the above (and below) subject...
Last Oct I realized that now would be the time in my life to complete the GMAT...target score +700. I would stop at nothing to complete my task and took the Princeton prep test to gauge my current level and scored a wonderful 490. I realized this was not the most accurate read of my skill level as it had been over 6 years since I even saw an algebra or geometry problem.
I put together a study plan and started with the OG 12 problems and worked part time with a private tutor who was not affiliated with any of the well known prep programs. Two months of struggling working 60 hours/wk and putting in approx 15-20 hrs/wk of study time I started to feel more confident and set my test date 30 days in advance (I had one more month to prepare). The funny thing was that exactly at this time I came across the
Manhattan Gmat material and realized that I did not have a strong grasp of fundamentals (in almost all areas) and was just using go through problems/answer explanations in the OG 12. At this time I set a tough schedule of going through almost all of the material (8 books) before the exam (30 days) and doing problems in the OG 11 book on the weekend (I had already finished the OG 12). Then....something "interesting" happened...
Two weeks into the
mgmat prep - or two weeks before my scheduled exam - I decided to take a practice CAT exam and scored a 600. This was not what I was expecting but still determined to reach my goal of 700 (or at least very close) by my test date in 2 weeks. One week later I took another CAT test and SCORED a 480!!!!!!! Needless to say, I was pretty "upset." It gets worse; after reviewing my incorrect answers and reviewing more
mgmat material I took my 3rd CAT test (today) and scored ANOTHER 480. How does one go from a 490 to 600 after studying for over 2 months then back to a 480? The psychological aspect of this situation is enough to make one go crazy and throw in the towel.
There are many aspects to my work and life such as living abroad, horrible work hours and hectic travel schedule but still, COME ON, what is the problem? If you guys have any advice for a study plan moving forward, I would love to hear it. I have already come to grasps that my test (next Monday Feb 7th) is off and will continue studying until the prep CAT tests are closer to my target.
Should I get a private online tutor?
Should I continue and go through AGAIN the MGAMT material?
Should I continue doing practice problems and CAT tests to judge my level and find strong points (if there are even strong points with a sub 500 level)?
How much time do I need to put into this to reach my target (forget about avg 50-150 pt improvement...I will get my 700 plus).
Do I need to quit my job and study full time for 4 months?!
Ok, enough questions but seriously, I am looking for some advice and thoughts on the matter.
Thanks in advance for any pointers, words of encouragement or thoughts you have. I will, maybe in 1 month or 5 months, be writing on this forum again celebrating with all of you my +700 achievement but am seeking some guidance at this moment!
Many thanks,
