Hello All,
Here comes a rather long chronicle.
I re-took my GMAT on Thursday and would like to chronicle my test experiences and share some of my preparation experiences. The first time I had got 620 (Q46, V30) on October 25-th, 2004

.
I had been a dormant member of this club until maaverick pointed out to me that the forums are very helpful. Then I started following the SC problems a few weeks before doing my tests and replied to a few.
Test experience:
I was the third person to arrive at the test center inspite of being there 1 hour earlier. Around 45 minutes later, one of the girls came in and called the first 2 people who had arrived before I did. They were not at their seat and hence I was asked to come in first

. I went in and asked whether I could be allocated the last seat in the room. I was pleasantly surprised to see headphones as ear plugs. The ones I got last time were very uncomfortable and kept popping out of my ear.
I started off and was faced with the institutions I wanted to send my score to. I filled these in and proceed to AWA and am accosted with an argument. It took sometime for me to get into the mood and I typed something not satisfactory (hope I get a decent score). Issue was even worse and it took me sometime to get the hang of the issue or atleast what I understood from it. I am still not sure whether I understood it right. I changed my stance half way through. One of the tips Arco says is that we should be flexible about the final stance that we take. So I was not too perturbed about changing the stance itself. However it did turn my timing topsy turvy and I barely had time to revise the essay. Not at all a good beginning

.
I take a break after this .. drank some water and walked around (I did not do this last time). Quants section proceeds faster. Unlike last time, this time I am not scared about tricks in easy questions. Last time I had solved the first question 20 times. This time I took it at face value and proceeded. I reached the last question with 2 minutes to spare and was about to press the confirm button when I realised that I had understood the question wrong. With just 9 secs to go and I quickly recalculated and selected whatever was the result of the quick recalculation without even rechecking it. I pressed confirm at the same time as the 1 sec disappears from the screen. I needed a few seconds to recover from that heart attack. I wonder in how many more questions I have made similar mistakes.
I got 3 probability problems in which one was a combination of co-ordinate geometry and probability and another one was probability DS. I got some speed problems and some mixture problems. I think I had more DS than PS. I got some inequality problems, some statistics including standard deviation, average and median. There was one question that was just the same as an OG question but with different numbers. On the whole, the questions were around the same standard as OG questions with around 3-4 difficult ones. Last time I had felt that the questions were of the Kaplan standard but maybe I felt different this time because I had practised more Quants this time.
The verbal starts with SCs. I was in the 6-th question with just 1 hour to go when I got a 60 liner RC. Timing went haywire when I got the next RC (55 liner) at 11-th question with just 47 minutes to go. A bold face and I wondered what was happening. I got another RC (40 liner) at 24-th question with just 30 minutes more to go. I checked the time and saw that I was at the 32-nd question and there were just 9 minutes remaining. I decide to do part guessing and part POE. I expected another RC since I had only had 3 RCs. The last 65 liner RC propped up at the 34-th question when I had just 7 minutes remaining. By now I had started to randomly guess. I finished with 1 sec remaining.
The demographic questions calm me before I take a look at the score. I hope if you press cancel you cannot see your score because I am not sure which one I pressed. I think I selected to view the score and there it was:
50Q, 38V - 720

As for my preparation:
The failed attempt:
I started preparing around August 2004 but not too seriously. Slowly I decided to fix a date. I registered for GMAT in October and then started studying seriously. I used the following materials at that time.
Arco 2004 (completed)
Barron’s 2004 – took only the tests since the difficulty level of the questions were given there.
Kaplan 2005 (completed)
Princeton Review 2005 (completed)
800score.com (completed)
OG – did only the first 50 questions in all sections.
Deltacourse
Kaplan 800: started reading the verbal around 5 days before the test and it psyched me out.
A week before the test in October, I started taking computer tests and fared badly in most of them. Scores in the tests were :
Arco Paper tests - 640, 620
Barron’s – 660
Kaplan –650 (Paper), 690 (diagnostic) in the beginning of October and then one week before the tests (660, 570, 580)
Princeton Review – 630 in the beginning of my preparation, 690 and 570 in the week before my test in the test on the system.
800score- 660 in the beginning of October and 570 the week before my test.
Powerprep- 670 in the beginning of the last week and 690 the day before the test
With these scores my mental make up was quite bad when I went for the test in October. Besides this, I was distracted by the typing noises made by the people, I hated the ear plugs but since the typing was too loud, I decided to use it. The orange ear plugs kept popping out and half my concentration was in keeping these in. I ran out of time in both Quants and Verbal.
When I saw my score (620 – Q46, V30) I was disappointed but I knew I had not done well. When a man who left the center along with me asked “Did you fail or pass ?â€
