I took GMAT today and scored only 530 ! (42 Q 21 V)
Its been just few hours since the test and I thought its a good idea to jot down how i managed to screw my scores so you don't.
1.
I did prepare only for 30 days or so because of time constraints The first test exam I took was after 10 days of prep and scored 510 and after few more test's scored 600. If you have don't have time constraints postpone till you score atleast 650 for 3 exams. The pressure in the real exam is way way way tough tough to handle !
2.
Relied mostly on official guide and only in the last week did go thru this forum, veritas prep videos and manhattan books from internet. The questions in quant where in the same range as the official guide but verbal was way tough (atleast for me).
3.I am an non-USA citizen residing in USA and apparently
I misunderstood the id requirements for the exam. I had to go back to get my passport (wasted 2 hours in traffic) since they didnt take my USA Driver's license. Another 30 mins begging, pleading the instructors to allow me to take the test.
By the time i started my test i was sweating like a pig and was not in a state to focus of 4 hours.
4. I never wrote AWA in my practice test, was too lazy for it. Never do that !
5. Just as the fundamentals of quant and verbal are important so is the time management and stamina to keep your energy going. By the time verbal test started I was starving and just wanted to finish the test and go home. So, when you take the practice tests take them as you would the official test. Preferably same time (morning, noon, evening) and conditions (dont keep munching some food, chips etc).
Now some points which I think can improve your score.
1. Go thru the 600+ level questions in this forum.
2. I think
Manhattan prep books are much better than Veritas and have questions which are as tough the real exam. If you don't want to spend $$$$ buying new, bing/google and you will find pdfs for free. I did the same.
3. Since I never practiced AWA, I relied on gmatclub post
how-to-get-6-0-awa-my-guide-64327.html for the essay. I think if you nail down the template you can write any essay.
Trust me, 30 mins is not enough time to type an essay. Also, bear in mind the keyboards in the test room are from 80's, clunky and not ergonomic. I am used to this one in my office for more than 5 years . I just could'nt adjust to the test center's keyboard and I am glad that i didnt have to think how to write and what to write in the AWA. I blindly followed the template
4. Practice Practice Practice till you get 650+ score
5. Download the free Veritas videos from iOS App store.
Feel free to ask any questions and I will answer them.
