I wrote my GMAT today and scored Q40 and V31-600.
My mock test results: 610(GMAT PREP 1) - I took this before beginning my preparations.
650(Economist) - 2 weeks before exam/ 1 week after prep
670 (GMAT PREP 2) - 2 days before exam
Now, here comes what happened on the exam:
AWA section was pleasant as expected. I finished writing it just 32 seconds before my time elapsed.
On IR section, when I was on question 6, I had 7 minutes left, so I guessed most of them, only 1 pie chart I solved in between from 8 to 12. I got a 4.
On quant, I wanted to finish 10 questions when my timer shows 55 mins left, 22 or 23 at 30 mins and around 33 at 10 and the rest before times up.
But what actually happened: On 10, timer is at 53 mins. The questions were not difficult but I wanted to be careful for the first ones. I think I am good here. But, when I am at 15th question timer is at 40 mins. The questions were long and difficult. So, I thought let me get these right and I will guess a few in the end if needed. However, when I am answering Q21, timer is at 20 mins. On Q25, timer says 12 mins, I skipped two questions in between, it was on probability and surface area of hexagon, that I was not very confident of. Q28, I am on 5 mins and I started skipping, hoping I do find some question that I could solve under a minute. I found one or two and before I could click any option on Q37, my timer was up. So, I missed the last question.
I took the 8 min break and realised I have to time better in English. I got the first RC passage at Q7, the second at Q15, third at Q24 and final one at Q33. I had very little timing issue from Q25 to Q 30. I guessed 2/5 and again guessed 2/4 questions of the final RC. And I just clicked on the right option on Q41(SC- the number of kind of question, thankfully) and timer read 0.01. My exam was over@!
My preparation: 3 weeks time
So, I solely relied on GMAT Club for my preparation. I read the GMAT QUANT BOOK and went to the PS Questions by topic and Difficulty Directory. I picked PS topics of 600 range and solved most of them. I would practise PS from the forum for 2 hours or so and then move to SC and CR Questions by topic and difficulty. This was very useful and also after reading GMAT Quant Book, I really felt like my basics were clear. For SC, I read SC Book of
MGMAT, SC notes by Spidey, Ankur and Sameer of GMATClub. I learnt basics of CR from a quick CR revision note someone had posted. I don't remember the name now. I was able to dedicate a good 4-5 hours everyday for last 3 weeks.
While taking mock as well, I did not have timing issues. I wonder why did I face this difficult on the test day and how can I resolve it?I did take mocks as seriously as GMAT test by writing AWA's as well.
I had visited ISB in the month of Oct 2014 and I was inspired to join. So, I wrote the GMAT in 3 weeks hoping I do score a 670 at least to be able to apply to ISB. Since their last date for the admissions next year is Nov 30, 2014. Should I still apply? I am looking at starting my education next year, so will a retake help, say I write by Jan 1st week? And if a retake will help, then how and what should I focus on? Any suggestions and comments would be useful. Thanks
