I’m relieved to be one of the people sharing a success story finally.
My first attempt was in March 2020 and yielded a 610. I was disappointed because I had gotten a couple 690’s and even one 700 on practice tests. I used GMAC’s official practice tests from mba.com. I only use the first free set and purchases the second set with exams 3 & 4. At the time I didn’t consider my scores could be inflated because I had retaken some of the exams twice. Besides these practice tests, I didn’t want to spend too much $$$ so I only used the official GMAT 2020 guide and the free video courses available from GMATPrepNow.
After this first attempt, I decided to buy the full GMATPrepNow course and follow their study guide. By the time I took my second attempt in August 2020 I felt like I knew the concepts very well. However, I came away with a 620. Now I was extremely disappointed. I couldn’t believe I had a 10 point increase after months of additional studying. It didn’t make sense. I was getting bitter about how much money getting a good score seemed to cost. I resented the whole system because if I didn’t have the fortunate financial situation I’m in, I wouldn’t be able to afford these $275 exams or the hundreds that goes into prep materials. It all felt like some sort of “rich get richer” scheme. But after sulking about that for a few days, I got ready to go again. Although I think GMATPrepNow does a great job teaching concepts, I knew I had to switch up my approach.
I tried e-GMAT and hated it immediately so I quickly nixed that one. I already scored very highly in verbal (consistently in 90th+ percentile) because I’m a native English speaker who also loves grammar. e-GMAT made me feel confused about my native language. However, their technical approach to sentence structure may be great for someone who speaks English as a second language. After posting my frustrations in the forum, Rich from EMPOWERGMAT pointed out to me that just because I know these concepts for quant - as an engineer, I felt comfortable with algebra and geometry and heavy math - does not mean I know how to approach the test. I was intrigued by this so I tried EMPOWERgmat and I’m SO GLAD I did.
I used the accelerated syllabus for both quant and verbal curated for people who have already been studying a lot. This program was the first to really explain how this test REALLY works and how to approach problems in the most efficient way possible. I realized my engineering approach, though accurate, was NOT efficient and left the door open to more opportunity silly mistakes.
Rich also totally gasses you up in these videos, I felt so much more confident and “empowered” when studying and doing practice problems. By the time my third attempt came around in December 1st, I went into it “knowing” that I know how to solve every single problem they throw at me - even if the problem is a bit crazy, the math and the concepts are things that I know (it’s not like it’s calculus!) and it was just a matter of understanding the question and the logic. I knew when to skip questions and how to guess better when skipping those questions. This confidence was essential. The tactics they teach in EMPOWERGMAT were exactly what I needed to succeed. Knowing the concepts simply isn’t enough. I would recommend this course to everyone!!
