Hey GMAT Club,
I took my first GMAT Focus attempt and scored a 635 after on-off studying for two months. Hoping to bump my score up to a 695, how should I plan ahead?
My 1st CAT I scored a 595 (Q:79,V:82,DI:77) without any prep. I then signed up for the Manhattan Prep course and studied from it for two months. Took the 2nd CAT at the midpoint of the course and got bumped down to a 565 (Q:81,V:81,DI:72). Took the 3rd CAT after finishing the course and got a 565(Q:80,V:80,DI:74).
Got extremely demoralized after seeing my score drop after preparing for two months with a dedicated course and stopped studying. Decided to still take my first attempt at the real GMAT to see what the real deal was like and scored a 635(Q:83,V:81,DI:80) without any studying for the month before. I found GMAT prep to be a lot more anxiety provoking than the actual GMAT test itself.
I have decided study properly for another 1.5months and retake the GMAT.
Adding my analysis of my real GMAT test score below
Quantitative Reasoning (83):
- Found it to be super easy compared to the practice tests.
- Finished the section 10 mins ahead of time. Could have done a better time bookmarking the first question so I could have come back to it.
- Arithmetic: 55th percentile, Algebra: 100th percentile. My arithmetic is definitely weaker than my algebra.
- Pure Context: 71st, Real Context: 80th
- Rates/Ratios/Percent: 59th, Value/Order/Factors: 39th, Equal/Unequal/ALG: 100th, Counting/Sets/Series/Prob/Stats: 100th
I still have CAT #4, #5, #6 left for practice. When it comes to Quant I feel it's all about practice and I feel I can bump my score to at least 87 there. Can also become more diligent when it comes to error log use. Relying more on algebra every time compared to arithmetic is my issue. I also tend to read super fast and the majority of my mistakes during practicing were derived from skimming over the question prompts.
Verbal Reasoning (81):
- Ran out of time for the last question
- CR: 54th percentile, RC: 81st percentile.
- Analysis/Critique: 52nd, Plan/Construct: 53rd, Identify Inferred Idea: 71st, Identify Stated Idea: 100th
Verbal is a tricky one. Getting better at first reads so that I don't need to reread can be a major point to improvement. Mind wandering during the Verbal section is also an issue of mine. I find that I don't tend to use the verbal strategies I have learned on the actual tests and revert back to my original way of solving verbal questions. As such, I feel I have more potential to improve on CR than RC. Skimming over the text and answer choices too fast such that I don't understand the text was a recurring problem during practice.
Data Insights (80):
- Ran out of time on the last two question.
- Biggest sectional score improvement.
- Math Related: 79th, Non-Math Related: 80th
- DS: 51st, Graphs & Tables: 81st, MSR: 100th, Two-Part Analysis: 445th. MSR has consistently been my strongest question type in DI during practice tests as well.
- Got two MSR prompts
Saw the biggest improvement in DI from my practice test. DI has been the most angst provoking section during my practice tests. Taking the GMAT without any expectations and hence no angst helped with DI the most. Learning to guess and move on tough problems is something I can get better at. My usual problem of reading and skimming too fast hurt me the most in DI. During my practice I was the weakest in DS as I would not test cases for each statement and more so rely on judging each statement by intuition.
Would love if you guys could suggest how I should study for the next 1.5 months before I take my second GMAT attempt. I still have CAT #4, #5, #6 left for use and also a lot of questions from OG.

You can also use GMAT CLUB TESTS (it’s quant sectional tests proved really helpful for me as it has a variety of quant questions) for further enhancing your score.

For CR, consider checking out Manhattan-Prep's 6th edition for Critical Reasoning. For RC, if you want to practice reading (without burning official passages/questions), articles from The Economist could be helpful. If there are certain types of passages you find more challenging (e.g. science), you could also search for those.
