640 - Should I retake?

Hello,

Not sure if this is the right place for the post- thanks for any helpful responses, I could definitely use some advice.

I just took the GMAT, got a 640, with only a 42 on Quant (ouch). My MGMAT practice tests ranged from 600 - 710 this past month.

My question is - should I retake the test if the schools I am aiming for have mean scores around 660? I would love not to sit this terrible test again (sorry gmat lovers). Will having a 640 with that quant hurt me enough that a retake is warranted? Thanks people.

Hi Troy, welcome to gmat club!

If your score is within 20 points of your target school's gmat, then I will not advise you to retake. Infact you should work hard on your essays & make your case look different from other applicants. GMAT is not the only indicator of one's abilities. You may also check this thread out

Troy, If your applying for R2 this year then I would suggest you to focus on your essays rather than GMAT, because it all depends on would you speak for yourself or will you let the score speak for you?

If your applying next year, then take some time in between and re attempt the test. Take it easy, put your efforts.

I agree that If your target was 660, 640 won't hurt you... but I think that 700 might help you a lot. 
May I ask what your verbal score is , and how you scored on quant on practice tests?
