Hi GMAT Club,
So here's the thing – I'm Ambareesh, and I just scored a 655 (91st percentile) on the GMAT Focus after what can only be described as a really long, messy journey with more stops and starts than I'd like to admit. But I'm here now, and honestly? I wish someone had told me what I'm about to share with you when I started back in January 2024.
I'm coming at this from a different place than most of you probably are. I have almost 12 years of work experience in government services, and I'm at that point in my career where I need to pivot. An MBA seemed like the logical next step – opens doors, great for career progression, you know the drill. I'd taken the GRE way back after my bachelors, but this time around, everyone I spoke to who'd made similar transitions recommended the GMAT. They said something that stuck with me: the analytical preparation for GMAT actually helps later in B-school. I really hope that's true because wow, a LOT of effort has gone into this.

After deciding on GMAT, I did what everyone does – researched online, asked around. e-GMAT kept coming up with solid reviews both on GMAT Club and through word of mouth. I spoke with their consultant, took the trial, and it seemed like it would work. So I jumped in.
Looking back now, I can tell you this platform gave me exactly what I needed, but I also made every possible mistake in how I used it initially. More on that disaster later.
THE FOUNDATION: BUILDING FROM SCRATCH AFTER 12 YEARS
Here's what nobody tells you about coming back to academics after 12 years in the working world – you think you remember stuff, but you really don't. Subjects like Verbal, Quant, school-level concepts? Completely off. The basics were shot.
Verbal: From 37th Percentile to 83rd Percentile
This is where my biggest transformation happened, and it took me way too long to figure out how to do it right.
The Master Comprehension Breakthrough
Before even touching CR or RC, e-GMAT has this Master Comprehension module, and I need to tell you – this was the real deal. But here's the thing: we think we know what a noun is, we think we understand sentence structure, but this module showed me how concepts actually connect, how one thing implicates another.
The way the course is structured is brilliant for someone like me who needed to start from scratch:[/size]
My Biggest Mistake: The Shallow First Attempt
Okay, so here's where I screwed up badly. When I started the CR course, I did it wrong. I started, took a break for 2-3 months (my first major mistake), came back in panic mode thinking "oh my god I've wasted so much time," and then just rushed through lessons without paying attention to actually learn anything.
I was just trying to finish as fast as possible. Big mistake.
The course has these learning level grades – you finish a file and get graded A, B, or C based on how well you understood the concepts. I had a couple of Bs and Cs but didn't think much of it. Then I had an intervention call with my mentor who told me to go back and redo everything where I scored less than an A.
My first reaction was honestly "why are they making me do this again?" But then I spoke to friends who'd used the platform successfully, and they all said the same thing: you have to actually USE the course properly to get results. You can't just check boxes.
The Turning Point: Taking It Seriously
So I went back through CR and RC properly this time. Deliberately. And the difference was night and day.
Here's what I learned that actually stuck:
Understanding Arch Types in CR: Initially, I couldn't figure out the difference between the question types. Going through it properly the second time, the distinctions became crystal clear. The course breaks down each type systematically, and when you actually pay attention to WHY each archtype works the way it does, everything clicks.
Payal's Video Messages: After every module or test, there's a video message from Payal. These videos give you deep insights into exactly where you went wrong. It's not generic feedback; it's pinpointed analysis of your specific errors.
Once I started paying attention to these messages and the follow-up emails with screenshot videos and commentary showing exactly which modules I was struggling with and what to practice, my improvement accelerated dramatically.
The jump from 37th percentile to 83rd percentile in Verbal didn't happen because I did more questions. It happened because I finally learned the fundamentals properly.

The e-GMAT Quant course is laid out in this beautiful, gradual progression. Each topic – whether it's word problems, number properties – is covered comprehensively at the fundamental level.

Just like Verbal, I rushed through Quant initially. Didn't pay attention. Thought I could just finish topics as fast as possible and move on. Classic mistake.
The basic tendency any candidate has is to finish topics quickly. But that doesn't work. You have to move on only when you're very clear with the fundamentals. The platform has all the details and exercises you need – you just have to actually pay attention to them.
When I went back and rediscovered the content I'd glossed over, I realized: these exercises I wanted, the details I needed, they were all already there. I just hadn't been paying attention.
ERROR LOGS (I WISH I'D DONE THIS FROM DAY ONE)
Okay, listen. If you take away one thing from my entire debrief, let it be this: MAINTAIN AN ERROR LOG. RELIGIOUSLY.
I learned this lesson way too late, and the exponential growth I saw in my prep came only in the last phase after I finally started doing this properly.
My Error Log Journey (Spoiler: I Did Everything Wrong First)
First attempt: Didn't maintain an error log at all. Zero. Nothing.
Second attempt: Didn't maintain it religiously.
Third attempt prep: Finally figured it out, and this is when everything changed.
Here's the thing about error logs – e-GMAT (and every forum, every discussion about GMAT) keeps saying to maintain one. But I didn't. For the longest time, I didn't.
Why Error Logs Actually Matter
Listen, there's no shortage of questions on e-GMAT. The platform has enough questions – I've used 80-90% of the Scholaranium question bank. You'll never run out of practice material. That's not the issue.
The issue is whether you're learning from your mistakes.
Yes, pattern recognition happens when you do enough questions. Your brain automatically registers patterns, you get faster, you start finishing Quant in 38-39 minutes instead of barely making it to 45. Some people even have 10 minutes extra. But you can ONLY achieve that if you review your mistakes religiously.
How to Actually Use an Error Log (Not How I Did It Initially)
When I first started maintaining an error log, I did it wrong. I'd fill it up but never go back to review it. Maybe half an hour before a mock, I'd quickly glance through what I'd written. That doesn't work.
Error logs have to be religiously scheduled into your plan. First thing Sunday morning. First thing Monday. Whatever works for you – but you have to give it dedicated time. An hour minimum.
Yes, it means you do 10-20 fewer questions that week. Yes, it means one less sectional mock. But it's worth it because you're actually learning instead of just grinding through questions.
SECTIONALS AND MOCKS: BUILDING TEST-TAKING SKILLS
Timing and Speed: It's All About Practice
The speed to finish 20-23 questions in 45 minutes – that comes with practice. There's no magic formula. You have to do enough sectional mocks and full-length mocks to build that muscle memory.
But here's the hard part: you also have to build the confidence to leave a question and move on. Even when it's scary.
The Mental Game
Leaving a question on the actual test is terrifying. If I left question 4, it would linger in my mind until question 10. What if I had spent 30 seconds more? The next questions are coming so easy – does that mean I got that one wrong and the test is penalizing me with easier questions? Have I already lost it?
These thoughts will creep in. The game is ignoring the noise and just keeping going. It's very hard, but you have to practice it over and over through mocks to get comfortable with it.
When to Start Taking Mocks
Get your concepts clear first. There's no point diving into mocks before that. Once you feel confident about concepts, then take on sectional mocks and full-length mocks.
Timing comes only through practice. The more sectional mocks you do, the better you get at managing time.
Even if you can manage 3-4 minutes spare in Quant, or 3 minutes in Verbal, you're in good shape. DI is generally lengthy with a lot of reading and going back and forth – very few people manage extra time there, maybe 1-2 minutes at most. But Quant and Verbal? You should be able to manage some buffer time with enough practice.
THE ROLE OF MENTORSHIP: COURSE CORRECTION WHEN NEEDED
Having a mentor like Abha through e-GMAT's program made a huge difference, especially when I was going off track.
The intervention call where I was told to redo everything I'd scored less than an A on – that redirection was crucial. The brutally honest feedback when I wanted to schedule my test before I was ready – that wake-up call changed everything.
The follow-up emails with detailed analysis, screenshot videos showing exactly where I was going wrong, specific modules to practice – this level of personalized guidance kept me on track even when I was tempted to cut corners.
TEST DAY AND FINAL THOUGHTS
My official test had its challenges, but the strategies I'd practiced through mocks paid off. That fourth and fifth question issue? Caught it because I'd trained myself to take extra time there. Bookmarked questions in Quant, came back to them, changed answers from wrong to right.
The 655 on my screen represented not just the score, but finally learning how to prepare properly.
