Hi guys,
Took my GMAT last saturday (9/25) after 2 months of following an erratic study schedule. Ended up with rather dissapointing results:
690 Q:48, V:36AWA: Not received yet
Study Materials:
MGMAT - Complete set
OG Guide, OG verbal, OG quant
Study Test Scores: (all in 10 days)
MGMAT 1: 700 (Q44, V41)
MGMAT 2: 690 (Q:48, V36)
MGMAT 3: 680 (Q47, V35)
MGMAT 4: 690 (Q:48, V36)
MGMAT 5: 680 (Q:47, V:35)
GMATPrep 1: 700 (Dont recall the split but very similar to above)
GMATPrep 2: 680 (Dont recall the split but very similar to above)
What went wrong:
As you can see, my scores hovered around the 680-700 range and that is what i got in the final exam. But going into the exam, i got greedy and thought i could pull off 700+ score (really stupid of me of think that way!). Anyways, here are some of things that i think contributed to my not-so-stellar performance:
1. I was getting hammered with cartloads of work at my day job in the weeks leading up to the test. I also ended up taking most of my full-length tests in this same window. Combined with work-related stress and lack of sleep, I think i got burnt out by the time i got to the exam. So, i think i might've been better off if i rescheduled my exam by a couple of weeks.
2. I did not spend enough time reviewing full-length exams. I just mechanically wrote tests and hoped that i would peak at the real test with a boost in scores. (plain stupid!)
3. I did not spend enough time reviewing the material and this really worked against me in SC. I could not remember half of the SC rules/idioms that i crammed a month before the test.
Test Day:
Surprisingly, i wasn't feeling nervous or jittery before or during the test. Completed AWA comfortably with a relatively easy argument and issue. Quant was trickier than i expected with a lot of number property/inequality questions. No prob/combinatorics which i had practiced quite a bit before the test. However, verbal really did it for me. I was not confident with most of my SC/CR choices. CR questions looked rather benign but i always ended up with two choices, had to choose one and move on. It was the same case with SC. I was not in a timecrunch in either section. RCs were okay and i think i got a majority of them correct.
I am really dissapointed and was hoping for a 700+ score so that i could take a shot at M7 schools, INSEAD and LBS. I belong to the Indian Engineer applicant pool and any application with a below-700 score will be not looked at competitively. I am planning on taking a break for a week and dive into it again. Planning for a retake by Nov first/second week so that i can still take a shot at most schools for R2. Please let me know what you guys think...thanks for your inputs!
