I am done finally. After 2 months of intense prep, I was expecting a better score, but I think this score should be enough for my target schools.
My Practice test scores:
Kaplan Practice Test (Book): 630
Kaplan CD Test 1: 610
GMATPrep 1: 690
PR 1: 710
GMATPrep 2: 710
GMATPrep 3: 700
GMATPrep 4: 710
Actual GMAT: 700 Q46 V40
The irony is that my quant score in the actual GMAT is the lowest I ever scored and my Verbal score in the actual GMAT is the highest I ever scored. My quant score was never below 49 and the Verbal ranged between 35-37.
Prep included most of the usual stuff:
PR
Kaplan 2006 Book
OG11
Kaplan 800
MGMAT SC
Other downloaded material from forums etc
Looking back, I have concluded the following:
1) The quant on the actual GMAT was way harder than OG11. The questions needed lot more time than the usual 2 min/ques. I had to guess the last 5 questions in Quant on my GMAT cos I ran out of time. I have a Masters and a Bachelors degree in Engineering and I feel pretty comfortable with Math, but I still feel that the Quant section was not an easy deal.
2) OG 11 is good for Verbal, but not much help for quant.
3) I also feel that practice can help us improve our performance initially and after that we tend to hit a plateau. This plateau is based on your inherent aptitude skills, which are difficult to improve. For eg. I hit a plateau with 710 on my practice tests. Even with focussed and intense preparation, I could not improve my score beyond that. Once you know the rules, formulae, tricks etc there is nothing much you can do to improve. Improvement beyond that plateau will require significant investment of time and may still be marginal. That's how the GMAT is able to distinguish between people of different aptitude skills.
After taking 4 GMATPrep tests and scoring between 690 and 710, I was in a denial phase and I strongly believed that I could certainly do better than 710 on the real GMAT. I was confident of scoring atleast a 740. But I was proved wrong.
Anyway, I think the ordeal is over. I did not contribute a whole lot to this forum, but I did turn to it for many questions and explanations. Thanks to all you guys for keeping up the good work.
I plan to apply to the part time programs at UChicago and Kellogg. I will keep you posted on my progress. Any input will be appreciated.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions on the prep or the test.
