I took the GMAT in Feb and scored a 710 (Q44/V42) (see:
710-q44-v42-90347.html ). I've decided to retake for the following reasons:
1) I was testing on the
MGMAT and GMATPrep CATs at the 730-740 range in the week leading up to the test and know that I have a score "in me" somewhere in that range or better. Its also a bit of a pride thing knowing I could probably score higher if I took it again.
2) I am taking the CFA LIII in June and had to take the GMAT in Feb b/c I couldn't put off CFA study any longer. I felt with about another month that I could have polished up a lot of loose ends. I'm looking to do that now.
3) I am a white male finance guy looking to go into IB, which is a pretty competitive demographic for business schools. I am also applying at CBS, Booth, Stern, and Kellogg, all of which are even more over-populated for my specific demographic than some other top 20 schools. I think a higher GMAT will give me a bit of an "edge" in a pool whose average score is probably well above the school averages -- at the very least it shows I'm willing to "fight" for a spot and that I'm not someone who settles.
4) IB firms are increasingly using GMAT scores as a data point for their recruiting -- scoring above 720 will help. Scoring in the 740-750 range will definitely help (or at the very least, it will definitely not hurt).
StrategyIf I can improve my score to something like Q48-49 and V45-46, I will be very satisfied. I think this is a doable goal. The danger is I am only going to give myself a month to study before retaking. I am looking for perhaps taking another program to help me really squeeze out those extra points.
First time around I used the entire
MGMAT series self study, OC12, and the OG Verbal and OG Quant guides. I will probably review these books, especially the subjects that give me the most trouble. However, to get myself to “the next level,” I am considering buying Jeff Sackmann’s quant and verbal guides, as well as the extreme quant problem set to supplement my existing studies. Does anyone have experience with these guides? Can you get the most out of them in only a month’s time?
Other approaches I am considering are the
GMATClub tests (these are mostly for quant, correct?) and GMATPill. Any suggestions on these? Again, I really think I have a strong foundation where I was able to test in the 730 range (and can probably get back to that level in a week or so) and I’m looking to move up to that next level of a 750ish score.
Any suggestions from people who either a) have experience with the test preps I’ve been considering or any others you think could help, b) have done a “short turn-around” retake such as myself, with only a month of prep between tests, or c) people who have moved from the 700 to the 750 range on a retake would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
