Took it last week and am very pleased. If you were a liberal arts major, you haven't taken a math class in about a decade, work all week and only have a couple of months to prepare I strongly suggest the 8-session Princeton Review course. Cost = $1299.
I firmly believe that just about anyone can get almost every question right in Quant. Here is the problem: you have about 2 mins. per question!! My PR course gave me the tools I needed to do well on Quant and complete all of the questions in time. For both Verbal and Quant, I learned a lot of techniques that were invaluable.
If you have more time than I did, you probably can get by with just going through the Official Guide with a fine-tooth comb. You MUST take some practice CATs to get the timing down and know what to expect. The Princeton Review and free tests from GMAC were great. I also bought 3 CATs from
https://www.manhattangmat.com which exposed me to some very hard quant. Good stuff. I'll break it down:
Started to study around August 30.
mba.com Test One (before I ever cracked a book): 580
PR Test One: 550
PR 2: 570
PR 3: 620
PR 4: 670
GMAC Test One (from the CD you get in the mail): 700
PR 5: 640
GMAC Test 2: 710
* At this point, around October 25, my Princeton classes were over and I wanted to look at some hard quant stuff, so I bought 3 CATs at
Manhattan GMAT. I feel like this was a great idea, but when you are taking these turn off the timer for the quant. Seriously, the math is too hard to do in 75 mins.
Manhattan 1: 600 (with the timers on)
Man. 2: 640 (with the Quant timer off)
Man. 3: 710 (with the Quant timer off)
Took the test on November 4, told myself that I'd be pretty happy with a 680 and pulled a 720 on the first try. There you have it.
In review:
- Get the Official Guide and do every single problem
- Take classes at Princeton Review unless you have 4 months and several hours per day to devote to this. (I have heard mixed feelings about Kaplan).
- Take several CATs to get the pacing down. You have to be able to do the math quickly, eliminate wrong answers right away, etc. The time limit of the Quant section is THE HARDEST part of this whole thing if you ask me. I got a good score and I guessed on the last three questions 'cause I was down to my last minute.
- Don't kill yourself mastering stuff like permutations. You'll see one question at most.
- Memorize your idioms
Feel free to ask me more, I'm on to applying. Later!
