Finally got the big beast off my back and glad that the process is over. After writing the GMAT last August with a dismal 610, I decided this past July to rewrite in hopes of breaking 700.
Game day:
- Test scheduled at 1pm
- Worked out from 9-10am
- Went out for breakfast from 10-11am w/ the gf
- Drove to test center 11:30 - 12pm
- Quick flip through
OG just to get my mind on track
- Downed a can of Coke (worked wonders!)
- Arrived at test center 12:30pm
- Burned GMAT books 5:00pm
I studied approximately 20 hours per week for 8 weeks, studying approximately 2 hrs/day on weekdays and 5 hrs/day on weekends. I used the following materials:
Official Guide 11ed
OG - Verbal Workbook
OG - Quant Workbook
Kaplan GMAT Premier Program
Princeton Review - Cracking the GMAT
MGMAT Number Properties
MGMAT Sentence Correction
The GMAT Advantage w/Professor Dave
Of all the materials I used, I would highly recommend all
OG material and
MGMAT books to address your specific weaknesses. Also, the GMATclub kept me motivated and helped me refine some problematic math skills (i.e. probability/counting methods/functions). Unfortunately I did not use the GMATclub challenges but I have heard many people speak highly of them.
In total I wrote 12 CAT's (didn't bother with the AWA) as follows:
July 22/07 Kaplan CAT 1 610 Q37, V36
July 28/07
MGMAT Online 1 580 Q43, V28
July 29/07
MGMAT Online 2 630 Q37, V37
Aug 3/07 Princeton Review 610 Q34, V41
Aug 7/07 Kaplan Online 670 Q42, V38
Aug 11/07 PowerPrep #1 740 Q49, V42
Aug 12/07 PowerPrep #2 690 Q46, V39
Aug 18/07
MGMAT Online 3 660 Q44, V36
Aug 19/07 Princeton Review 690 Q47, V42
Aug 24/07 GMAT Prep #1 740 Q49, V42
Aug 25/07 GMAT Prep #2 760 Q50, V42
Aug 31/07 GMAT Prep #1 - Redo 690 Q47, V38
Other things I did during my study period:
- Created a study schedule and logged hours
- Created flash cards for some SC questions that I found tricky
- Used
error log to track hit rates and weaknesses
- Exercised as often as possible to detach myself from studying
- Identified weaknesses early so that I could properly address them (e.g. timing on quant, rushing RC questions, being scared of number properties, etc.)
Anyways, all the best to all other writers! Kick the GMAT's ass! Take no prisoners...
