So I have been preparing for the test for the last one month. Gave test 3 of the official GMAC and scored 730. Also scored 740 on Expert Global free test. 700 on E-GMAT free test. And 710 on test 2 of the official GMAC. Yesterday night I gave the test 4 and I scored an abysmal 630 with 48 on Quant (for some reason I could not submit the 31st question - I might have scored 49 otherwise). On verbal however, while was in the range of 38-42, I scored a horrible 28!!

I am trying to figure out what went wrong. One thing I realized while analyzing was that I was completely disoriented. I had not understood the actual intent of the questions, and had gone about marking the questions blankly (relying an equal amount on both my verbal skills and my instincts).

Can somebody help me figure out what might have caused this? Would it just be that I am mentally tired? Or could it be something else? Has anybody experienced this kind of a thing? How do I prevent this from happening again?

Also note that I scored well on Quant (while being silly and not submitting the 31st question) . The order of the test was Q-V-IR (online format). Could it be that I am tiring myself out by the end of the quant section and with no break on the online format, am messing up the verbal section?

Hi popcornninja,

Based on your other CAT/mock Scores - and the fact that you took this most recent CAT at NIGHT - it's likely that you were just too tired to perform at your best. You should want to take your practice CATs at a day and time that you are at your best mentally, physically and psychologically; for most GMATers, taking a test at the end of the day is NOT the best time for any of those states. If you've taken all of your CATs in the evening, then you might just have had a 'bad day' on this one CAT - but you should also consider shifting your schedule to take your CATs earlier in the day.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Very well said, EMPOWERgmatRichC, I agree.

The GMAT harshly punishes imprecision and careless errors, so resting well and preventing fatigue can make a huge difference -- a notable example is a client going from 620 to 740 on 2 practice tests within a week, when well-rested versus tired. So, popcornninja, you are not alone, and your 710 and 730 on official mocks are very encouraging in only one month of prep. If you have the time, continuing to practice and learn from your verbal mistakes will increase your confidence and consistency.

An advantage of the online format is that you have more flexibility to thoughtfully choose the ideal start time for you. I've seen research that 3-4 hours after waking is ideal, but it can depend on the person, so think about when you are most focused and sharp. (graph attached)

Best wishes on your GMAT training and exam!
