I got a 740 with Q48 and V44.
I did well throughout quant, but had to guess last 3 questions with little accuracy. I was respecting time throughout but unfortunately became much slower at the end. I was not expecting to get V44, I felt confident selecting choices in the section but also got an advanced reading text in a topic I am very familiar with.
On top of that, I got a very low IR score of 5. I know I can at least get a 7 which is what I got in my previous GMAT attempt.
I would appreciate your opinion on whether to take the GMAT again or not. I am planning to apply to the best B-schools in 2/3 years time.
If it’s relevant, I have an bachelors in engineering (supports my good quant skills despite my scores).

Hi KarimAbdo,
740 is a great score. You could take the GMAT again (maybe get that quant score up, to a 50 or 51?), but be prepared for diminishing returns. If I were you, I probably wouldn't take it again if it meant a significant commitment of time.
That said, if you are looking to take the exam again, taking it now may be a good idea. Getting back to preparing for the GMAT after 1-3 years may be time-inefficient.

First off, a 740/Q48 is an outstanding Score, so you will be able to comfortably apply to any Business Schools that interest you. Many Business Schools have publicly stated that they do not use an applicant's IR score when evaluating an application (and it's worth noting that an IR5 is not a 'low' Score for this section), so you likely have nothing to be concerned about here. However, if you're interested in what a specific School/Program thinks about the IR score, then you should research that School directly (you might also consider contacting the School to ask). This is all meant to say that a retest is probably not necessary.
If you are planning to apply to some highly-competitive Schools in the future, then you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement (and the more time that you have to act on that advice, the better).
