Hello GMAT1003,

thank you for sharing your background and applications info. Overall, you have a strong profile and a competitive GMAT score for Indian candidates.
Answering your inquiries:
1) Would this be considered a step-up in the reapplication?
ANS> It would be considered new information for sure and a narrative more aligned with your ultimate goals. This career movement adds value to your resume and certainly to your application.
2) I wanted to understand if changing my short-term and long-term goal would be possible, and if so, what should it be (especially because mentioning PE/VC is considered quite a red flag because of the dearth of post-MBA recruitment opportunities in the field)
ANS> It is OK for you to change your ST/LT career goals in this year's application. Perhaps mention you want to join another VC that is more well-established, with a stronger brand and that focuses on raising funds/seed for companies with stronger sustainability agenda.

Regarding your two questions:

1) Would this be considered a step-up in the reapplication?

A: Yes, it would be an improvement. What about any changes to extracurricular activities or other types of leadership? That counts too. In general for re-applicants, it's all about showcasing what you learned that's new about yourself through these changes to your profile. Also, don't discount the fact that you will be part of a new candidate pool. This past year (and the year before) was brutal with the pandemic as a disrupting factor.

2) I wanted to understand if changing my short-term and long-term goal would be possible, and if so, what should it be (especially because mentioning PE/VC is considered quite a red flag because of the dearth of post-MBA recruitment opportunities in the field)

Yes, you can of course change your post-MBA goals. There's nothing written that says your preferences can't change. While it may not hold a ton of weight (career goals can't be proven/validated), it could be a good way to show the new thought you have put into your candidacy and reasons for wanting an MBA. It's very much fair game - just back it up with thoughtful, logical reasoning.

Thank you for your insightful responses. I just had a follow-up query - could my GPA (3.2) be a reason for an automatic ding at SBS and CJBS? I've been told by a couple of people that Cambridge and Oxford are pretty rigid on UG GPA, so reapplication wouldn't make any sense to either of those 2 colleges (especially within 1 year of your previous application)

It might. GPA and GMAT are tricky because they're arguably the most objective factors in one's application, even if GPA is not exactly an apples-to-apples metric.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's an automatic ding, but it will definitely put a lot of pressure on other elements of your background. You MIGHT be able to get feedback from both schools as a reapplicant if your GPA will be a severe handicap. It may not be black and white but could be directional. 3.2 isn't terrible but it's definitely on the lower side for those schools.

Hi GMAT1003,

The answer to the first two questions is a Yes. It will be an additional talking point and you can always change your career goals (might actually showcase how you have put fresh thought into your application).

GPA could be a factor even though only the school can really confirm this. It might actually be a good idea to check directly with the school (if they are ok with you applying with your existing GPA) before applying once again.

Good luck!
