In my experience a good gpa and grades in relevant coursework can make up for a bad breakdown. A good score can't fix a bad gpa. Put another way, it is easy to believe in the kid who is just a poor standardized test taker. It takes a lot more faith to believe in the test taking wizard who managed to fail calc yet somehow is gonna turn it all around this time.
