Hi Sachan,

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you're looking for, I'd like to know a bit more about how you've taken your CATs and your overall timeline/goals:

When you took your CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE?

When are you planning to apply to Business School?
What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Test, so you CAN train to score at a higher level. Unfortunately, since your GMAT is in a little over a week, that's probably not enough time to make any big improvements to your skills. As such, you might consider pushing back your Test Date.

Hi
Thanks for the reply!

When you took your CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)? - yes
2) Did you take them at home? - yes
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as your Official GMAT? - yes
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)? - No
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE? - No

When are you planning to apply to Business School? June 2017
What Schools are you planning to apply to? I look to join ISB for a PHD program or an exec MBA from top school (else its no point as I already have a MBA degree)

I have not booked the dates yet. I planned 9th Aug as I thought that I have stretched it way too much and I had 3 Days of holiday before 9th Aug.

Hi Sachan,

The pacing issue that you describe is going to limit how high you can score on Test Day. However, based on the information you've provided, you certainly have a reasonable chance at hitting your score goal. So if you're really considering an August 9th Test Date, then you have to decide if you're okay with taking the GMAT again later (and spending another $250) if need be. Considering the types of Schools that you're planning to apply to, it's possible that while a 640-650 would be competitive, that score won't necessarily be enough to make you 'stand out' relative to the other applicants.

If you're not planning to apply to Business School until NEXT June, then why are you thinking about rushing in to take the GMAT in a week?

Based on your practice test scores, you may consider pushing your GMAT to a later date. However, before doing so, I suggest that you take an official practice test from MBA.com, as the score from that exam will best predict how you will score on the real GMAT. If you score within your desired range of 650+, then there is a reasonable chance that you achieve a similar score on test day. However, if you score lower than your score goal, you may consider pushing your GMAT to a later date.

Once you take the MBA.com practice exam, report back with your score, and I’d be happy to provide some further advice.

Hi Guys!

I am in a fix.

I am an engineer & MBA (MDI, Gurgaon & ESCP-EAP, London). Post MBA experience - 8 Yrs 3 Months.

Dec 2013 - Actual GMAT (without much prep - 480 || shocked!!)
Decided to study hard as I had scored high %iles in 2006, however with regular hectic work schedule I studied on & off for last 1 year. I completed OG-10, OG-16, Verbal review 16, Princeton study material.

Scores:
Jun-Dec 2015
Princeton 1: 420
Princeton 2-5: 520
Princeton 6-8: 590
GMAT Prep 1: 580
June - Aug 2016
Studied more and attempted
Manhattan 1: 620
Manhattan 2: 640
Manhattan 3: 590 :(

Now I just want to take GMAT on 9th Aug and want a 75%ile +. Can someone please guide me how to make a schedule. Should I take more test, it might demoralize me in case i score another sub 600.

My main problem is that last 7-8 ques in both sections are guesses due to lack of time. I tried to fasten my speed but it ended up in 590!!

Can anyone please help. I have 2 Manhattan mocks, 1 GMAT prep mock left.

Regards,
Sachan Deep Singh

HI Sachan,

Based on your mock test scores, you should not take another test. The main aim of the mock CAT is to improve you understanding of the problems and the fundamentals.
The best way to gain from the mock CAT is by analysing them thoroughly.

1. Have you prepared an Error log?
2. Have you completed the OG and the Verbal review?

Also, I would strongly advice you to not go ahead and take the GMAT on the 9th of August. A holiday of 3 days will not serve any purpose to your cause.
You need to go back to the course that you were following and understand the concepts by drilling down deep:

SC: The questions test various concepts such as S-V agreement, modifiers, parallelism etc. Find out what troubles you.
CR: There might be certain types of questions that are troubling you. May be Assumption, may be conclusion, inference etc.
You need to find that out and then practice them
RC: This again can be drilled down into different types of questions and also different topics. See what questions and topics trouble you the most and then practice accordingly.

As an addition, start preparing an error log and keep a note of all the mistakes you made and the lessons you learnt from the problems. This will ensure you do not make the same mistake again.

Make sure you complete all of the OG and the Verbal review and if required, you can buy the Question pack1 from mba.com
