A and B undertake to do a piece of work for 450$. A can do it in 20 days and B can do it in 40 days. With the help of C, they finish it in 8 days. How much should C be paid for his contribution?

I don't like working with fractional jobs. On rates questions like this, let's just treat it as a Hidden Plug In (there's no variable in the question, but there sure is some piece of information we could just make up!). Let's make the job solving 40 GMAT questions.
A can solve 40 questions in 20 days, so 2 questions per day.
B can solve 40 questions in 40 days, so 1 question per day.
A and B together can solve 3 questions per day.
A, B, and C together can solve 40 questions is 8 days, so 5 questions per day. 3 of those 5 are done by A and B, so C can do solve 2 questions per day.
C solves 2 out of every 5 questions so is entitled to 2/5 of the $450. That's $180.
