I think it is E.

A, B, and C are incorrect as the modifier should immidiately follow the noun.

I go for "C"

A. A ballad by Simon Taylor, written in the same year as The Golden Sun were recorded - NOPS, apples and oranges! comparing year with Golden sun
B. A ballad by Simon Taylor, written in the same year of recording as The Golden Sun - I DON'T use of recording :)
C. A ballad by Simon Taylor, written in the same year that The Golden Sun was recorded - sounds the ans!
D. Simon Taylor wrote a ballad in the same year as he recorded The Golden Sun that - who told simon taylor recorded golden sun??
E. Simon Taylor wrote a ballad in the same year of recording as The Golden Sun that - combined D and B reasoning

Lets ace together!!

Little confusing but by applying POE method, I find C is the best among others.
So IMO it's C.

A ballad by Simon Taylor, written in the same year as The Golden Sun were recorded, shows that Taylor was a more diverse musician than is commonly believed.

A. A ballad by Simon Taylor, written in the same year as The Golden Sun were recorded
B. A ballad by Simon Taylor, written in the same year of recording as The Golden Sun
C. A ballad by Simon Taylor, written in the same year that The Golden Sun was recorded
D. Simon Taylor wrote a ballad in the same year as he recorded The Golden Sun that
E. Simon Taylor wrote a ballad in the same year of recording as The Golden Sun that

D & E have "that" redundant. We can eliminate them.
A is wrong because "were" is prural, while The Golden Sun is singular.

Now B & C solve these problems. But lets see how both compare:
C has more passiveness to it:
written in the same year that The Golden Sun was recorded
This is passive construction.

B on the other hand has more active construction:
written in the same year of recording as The Golden Sun

I would say its B, as active is preferred over passive on the GMAT.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

A & D & E can be eliminated, for the reasons explained by AlHindi.

B & C are left.

B – “…the same year of…â€

Additionally, (C) uses the correct S-V agreement: The Golden Sun was.

It should be "C"

A) S-V error
B) Comparison problem
C) The best
D) Changes the meaning, also 'that' refers to TGS
E) Comparison problem, also 'that' refers to TGS

A -> 'were recorded' is wrong
B -> 'same year of recording' is awkward
D -> 'that shows' is unnescessary
E -> 'same year of recording' is awkward, 'that shows' is unnescessary

C is the best choice. 'was recorded' is correct

C is the winner.

The best answer is C. In this sentence, the relative pronoun that should introduce the clause The Golden Sun.. recorded to make a relative clause modifying year. Also, the singular title of the song demands a singular verb: was.
