A batsman makes a score of 87 runs in the 17th match and thus increases his average by 3. Find his average after 17th match

A. 35
B. 39
C. 46
D. 54
E. 55

let the average of 16 matches be x.

16x + 87 = Total of 17 matches.

on the other hand, (x+3)17 is also the total of 17 matches.

16x + 87 = ( x + 3) 17

16x + 87 = 17x + 51

x = 36.

Now we are looking for the average after 17 matches .

36 + 3 = 39.

B is the correct answer.

let avg until 16th match = x
so
16x+87=17* ( x+3)
x = 36
x+3 ; 39
IMO B
