A border of uniform width is placed around a square photograph. If the photograph has a side length of n, and the width of the border is p, which of the following represents the area of the border?

A. \(2p^2 – n^2\)
B. \(2p(p - n)\)
C. \(2p(n + p) \)
D. \(4(p^2 – n^2)\)
E. \(4p(n + p)\)

We can create the following equation:

Since the area of the entire shape is (n + 2p)^2, and the area of the photo is n^2, the area of the border is:

(n + 2p)^2 - n^2

n^2 + 4p^2 + 4pn - n^2

4p^2 + 4pn

4p(p + n)

Answer: E
