Re: A certain doctor suggests that an individual's daily water intake be 1 [#permalink]

Hi. How do we know that 240 pound is not equal to "ideal weight+the exceeding weight"?
I made this mistake and thus I was confused. Should not the question mention that 240 pound is our ideal weight?

Re: A certain doctor suggests that an individual's daily water intake be 1 [#permalink]
I think we can explain it like..

The suggestion can be broken in 2 parts (1) Normal sugggestion - for every 1 pound there is 1/2 ounce suggested (2) Additional suggestion - For every 25 extra pounds from the ideal weight there has to be 8 punds

The patiens weight 240 pounds, that implies that

(1) 240(1/2) = 120
(2) (8/25)(240-x)= Additional

Where x is the excess on weight. So, since the doctor suggested 136 ounces

136= (1) + (2) = 120+ (8/25)(240-x)

We get that the excess on weight is 190, and the ideal weight is 50.

Hope it helps
