We should compute how much oil is produced in 4 years and 6 years and that should equal the total oil produced in 10 years.
this results in the equation
315 * 4 + x * 6 = 378 * 10
1260 + 6x = 3780
6x = 2520
x = 420
Answer is D.

- • The volume of oil that must be produced annually, on average, during the next six years, if oil production for the entire 10-year period is to meet a goal of 378 gallons per year
Approach and Working out
As the 10-year period average is 378 gallons per year,
- • Total production aimed in 10 years = (378 x 10) gallons = 3780 gallons
The average production per year for the first 4 years is 315 gallons
- • Total production in the first 4 years = (315 x 4) gallons = 1260 gallons
Hence, required total production in the next 6 years = (3780 – 1260) gallons = 2520 gallons
- • Therefore, average yearly production aimed = 2520/6 gallons = 420 gallons
Thus, option D is the correct answer.
