A certain recipe makes enough batter for exactly 8 circular pancakes that are each 10 inches in diameter. How many circular pancakes, each 5 inches in diameter and of the same thickness as the 10-inch pancakes, should the recipe make?

(A) 4

(B) 16

(C) 24

(D) 32

(E) 40

Given D = 10 inch, as the diameter of 8 pancakes.
Let h be the thickness.

Volume of the batter for 8 pancakes = \(8 *\pi * 10^2 * h / 4\)

Now let n be the # of pancakes of 5 inch diameter.

Volume of batter for these n pancakes = \(n *\pi * 5^2 * h / 4\)

The Volume of batter is same for the pancakes, hence \(8 *\pi * 10^2 * h / 4\) = \(n *\pi * 5^2 * h / 4\)

We get, n = 32

Answer D.

Thanks,
GyM

ratio of
Area of circle with radius R : Area of circle with radius r = R^2/r^2

ratio of
Area of Pancake with diameter 10, i.e. radius 5 : Area of Pancake with diameter 5, i.e. radius 2.5 = 5^2:(2.5)^2
= 25:6.25

Hence, Pancake with bigger radius is 4 times in area.
Therefore, smaller pancake shall be 4 times in quantity.

Hence, 4 X 8 = 32.
option D.
