We can solve this question using equivalent ratios

Given: (# of freshman)/(# of sophomores) = 5/3

Since 18 of the students are sophomores, we can write: (# of freshman)/(18) = 5/3

Cross multiply to get: (3)(# of freshman) = (5)(18)

Simplify: (3)(# of freshman) = 90

Solve: # of freshman = 30

So there are 18 sophomores and 30 freshmen, which means the total number of students = 18 + 30 = 48

Answer: D

Given, Number of freshmen to the number of sophomores in the class is 5x:3x

So, 3x = 18

Or, x = 6

How many students are in the class ?

Total no of students will be 6*(5+3) = 48, Answer must be (D)

\(\frac{F}{S}=\frac{5m}{3m}=\frac{(5*6)}{(3*6)}=\frac{30}{18}\)
Total: 30+18=48
