A company has 48 workers whose average age is 36 years. Eight of the workers are 21-year-old interns. What is the average age of the remaining workers?
A. 38
B. 39
C. 41
D. 42
E. 45
This sum can be approached in couple of ways, one such method is using : Mixtures and Alligations.
21. X
36.
8. 40.
(36-21) / (x-36) = (40/8)
15 = 5x - (36*5)
x = 39 Method 2:
All 48 are having an average age of 36.
If 8 are people who are interns of age 21. Then, they hold an excess weight of (36-21)=15 with each of them.
So, the cumulative excess weight has to be = (15*8) = 120.
So, this 120 weight has to be split up between 40 remaining people. So, each of the 40 people get an additional (120/40)=3 extra.
So, the average = 36 + 3 =
39 yrs. Option B This can also be solved using traditional approach:
(21*8)+(40*x) = 48*36
Solving we get, x =
39 Option B
