The cubes at the corners have exactly 3 faces painted. The cube at the edges have exactly 2 faces painted. The cube in the center have exactly one face painted.
Therefore 1 cube on each side *6 sides =6 cubes. Answer is A

So, there are 27 cubes in total.
In the diagram above, we can see that the middle cube on each face is the only cube that will have exactly one painted side.
There are 6 faces in total, so there are 6 cubes with exactly one painted side.
Answer: A
