A cylindrical pencil consists of a layer of wood surrounding a solid cylinder of graphite. The radius of the pencil is 6 mm, the radius of the graphite cylinder is 2 mm and the length of the pencil is 10 cm. Find the cost of the material used in a pencil, if the cost of wood is Rs. 0.70/cm3 and that of graphite is Rs. 2.80/cm3.

A. Rs. 7.85
B. Rs. 8.76
C. Rs. 9.36
D. Rs. 10.56
E. none of these
Solution:

Recall that 1 cm = 10 mm; therefore, 2 mm = 0.2 cm, and 6 mm = 0.6 cm.

Since the volume of the graphite is π x 0.2^2 x 10 = 0.4π cm^3, the cost of graphite is 0.4π x 2.8 = Rs. 3.52.

Since the volume of the pencil is π x 0.6^2 x 10 = 3.6π cm^3, the volume of the wood is 3.6π - 0.4π = 3.2π cm^3 and therefore, the cost of wood is 3.2π x 0.7 = Rs. 7.04.

Therefore, the total cost is 3.52 + 7.04 = Rs. 10.56.
