A dealer purchased an antique for $300 and then marked up the price of the antique by 40% of the selling price. what was the merchant's gross profit on the sale of the antique?

(A) $100

(B) $120

(C) $180

(D) $200

(E) $240

\(C + P = S\)

\(60 + 40 = 100\)

Thus, 60 represents 300

So, 40 represents 300/60*40 = 200 , Answer must be (D)

(A) $100

(B) $120

(C) $180

(D) $200

(E) $240

Here is a way to solve this problem..
Hope it assists..

There is no mention of Discount %..So, it's safe to assume that Discount = 0%. Consequently MP=SP

suppose, SP be taken as X.
CP (given in the question) = 300

then, mark-up will be 40% of X , 0.4 X

Given, 300 + 0.4X = X (Note :- CP+ Mark-up=MP, but since Discount=0%, so MP=SP)
0.6 X = 300
X= 500

Hence, profit = SP-CP
= 500 -300 = 200

Option (D) is the correct answer.
