A farmer has some bananas for sale. The first customer buys half the bananas plus half a banana. The second customer buys half the remaining bananas plus half an banana. The third customer buys half the remaining bananas plus half an banana.
At this point there are no bananas left. How many bananas were there at the start?
[And please, keep those posts coming ... I am starved of new problems to solve, so am posting problems from everywhere. I don't really have the GMAT sources to post the problems from. I appreciate all your help !!]

Let x be the no. of bananas.
1st person
-------------
x/2+(1/2) = (x+1)/2
Remaining x - (x+1)/2 = (x-1)/2
2nd person
--------------
((x-1)/4 ) + (1/2) = (x+1)/4
Remaining
(x-1)/2 -((x+1)/4) = (x-3)/4
3rd person
-------------
(x-3)/8 +(1/2) = (x+1)/8
x - ((x+1)/2 + (x+1)/4 + (x+1)/8) = 0
Solving we get x= 7
7 works as the question says.
