Given

• A farmer ordered x tons of feed for his cattle.
• The feed supply company charges for freight costs as follows: $100 per order plus $2 per ton after the first 10 tons.
• The farmer ordered at least 11 tons and paid $20 per ton (excluding freight costs).

To Find

• The total cost of his order in terms of x.

Approach and Working Out

    • Freight costs –
      o The first 10 tons cost $100.
      o Remaining cost = $2 × (x – 10)

    • Food cost –
      o $20x

    • Total cost –
      o $100 + $2 × (x – 10) + $20x
      o = $22x + 80
      o = $2 (11x + 40)

Correct Answer: Option C

Hi Bunuel. Why are we given that we have at least 11 tons?

In addition to the answer above,

If x is less than 10 or 10 then the cost would have been

    • Freight costs –
      o The first 10 tons cost $100.
      o Remaining cost for excess = 0

    • Food cost –
      o $20x

    • Total cost –
      o $100 + $20x
      o = $20 (2x + 5)

Two possible answers would have been there.

$ 20 per ton => for'x' tons = $20x
$ 100 freight charge
$2 per ton after the first 10 tons = $2(x-10)

Total: 20x + 100 + 2(x - 10)

=> 20x + 100 + 2x - 20
=> 22x + 80
=> 2(11x + 40)

Answer C
