Can someone explain why we divide 15 by 25? Actually, I have divided 10 by 25, because I thought 10 is the amount which refers to A. Thanks in advance :)

A feed store sells two varieties of birdseed: Brand A, which is 40% millet and 60% sunflower, and Brand B, which is 65% millet and 35% safflower. If a customer purchases a mix of the two types of birdseed that is 50% millet, what percent of the mix is Brand A?

A) 40%

B) 45%

C) 50 %

D) 60 %

E) 55 %

Let the customer mixed a quantity of Brand A and b quantity of Brand B.

So, 40%*a + 65%* b = 50% (a+b)

b= (2/3)*a

We have to find: a/(a+b), substituting the value of b in terms of a we get 3/5, i.e. 60% D

Shortcut for GMAT
(w1) 40-a-50-b-65 (w2)

a=10
b=15

Beam balance method:

w1 * 10 = 15 * w2
w1/w2 = 3/2

so % of w1 = 3/(3+2) = 3/5 = 60%
