This question can be solved conceptually, algebraically or by TESTing VALUES. Typically, I would not use the number 1 in these types of situations, but the answer choices are suitably unique, so using that number shouldn't be an issue.
We're told that a focus group is currently made up of X men and Y women. We're then told that 2 men and 4 women are added to the group. We're asked if one person is selected at random from the larger focus group, then what is the probability that a man is selected.
IF...
X = 1
Y = 1
Total Men = 1+2 = 3
Total Women = 1+4 = 5
Total People = 8
Probability of selecting a man is 3/8 when X=1 and Y=1
You should be able to find the correct answer without doing too much work...
