A government ought to protect and encourage free speech, because free speech is an activity that is conducive to a healthy nation and thus is in the best interest of its people.

The main conclusion above follows logically if which one of the following is assumed?

The structure initially freaked me out, but then I found out that this is an assumption question and that there are two conclusions . we need to find out the missing premise for the main conclusion.

Main conclusion: A government ought to protect and encourage free speech,

(A) An activity that is in the best interest of the people ought to be protected and encouraged by a nation's government.----Logically this is comes after the sub conclusion.

(B) Basic, inalienable rights of the people ought to be protected and encouraged by government.------ this is too generalized. were talking about free speech and best interest of people. so eliminate t

(C) An activity that helps a government to govern ought to be protected and encouraged by it. woahhhh... what about people dude!! you forgot?

(D) A government ought to protect and encourage an activity that is conducive to the interests of that government.-----same as c

(E) Universal human rights that are in the best interest of the people ought to be protected and encouraged by a nation's government. same as B included all rights which is too general.

Premise-Premise-Conclusion

C/D/E are out not aligned with question.

Among A & B.
Option B is generalized, while A logically follows

The main conclusion in the argument is that "a government ought to protect and encourage free speech because free speech is conducive to a healthy nation and thus in the best interest of its people."

(A) An activity that is in the best interest of the people ought to be protected and encouraged by a nation's government.
- This option directly supports the argument's main conclusion. It establishes a principle that when an activity is in the best interest of the people, the government should protect and encourage it. This aligns with the argument's assertion that free speech is in the best interest of the people, and therefore, the government should protect and encourage it.

(B) Basic, inalienable rights of the people ought to be protected and encouraged by government.
- While this statement supports the idea of protecting rights, it doesn't specifically address the argument's emphasis on activities that are in the best interest of the people, which is the central point of the argument.

(C) An activity that helps a government to govern ought to be protected and encouraged by it.
- This statement focuses on activities that help the government govern, which is different from the argument's emphasis on activities that are in the best interest of the people.

(D) A government ought to protect and encourage an activity that is conducive to the interests of that government.
- This statement suggests that the government should protect activities that are conducive to its own interests, which is not the same as protecting activities in the best interest of the people.

(E) Universal human rights that are in the best interest of the people ought to be protected and encouraged by a nation's government.
- While this option mentions universal human rights, which includes free speech, it combines multiple concepts, making it less direct in supporting the argument's main conclusion.

In summary, option (A) directly aligns with the argument's main conclusion, emphasizing that activities in the best interest of the people should be protected and encouraged by the government. Therefore, option (A) is the most appropriate assumption to support the argument.

A government ought to protect and encourage free speech, because free speech is an activity that is conducive to a healthy nation and thus is in the best interest of its people.

The main conclusion above follows logically if which one of the following is assumed?

(A) An activity that is in the best interest of the people ought to be protected and encouraged by a nation's government. - CORRECT. POE helps. If not then conclusion makes little sense.

(B) Basic, inalienable rights of the people ought to be protected and encouraged by government. - WRONG. But why. The disconnect persists.

(C) An activity that helps a government to govern ought to be protected and encouraged by it. - WRONG. This is like D only.

(D) A government ought to protect and encourage an activity that is conducive to the interests of that government. - WRONG. Rather takes a different direction. Like C only.

(E) Universal human rights that are in the best interest of the people ought to be protected and encouraged by a nation's government. - WRONG. Another new term introduced which is irrelevant even if it makes sense. Within the realms of the passage this doesn't fit.

Answer A.
