OA is D. Correct me if am wrong but I think the ',' in the sentence below should be replaced by ';' instead, since the second clause starts with the word fossils..

Not really; the word fossil acts as what is known as a resumptive/summative modifier. This is not a very common usage and hence we must understand this carefully. You can search for resumptive modifier on this site to find more explanation.
